Chocolate Castella

Castella is a Japanese-style cake beloved in Japan. However, it is believed to have originated from Spanish and Portuguese sweets, which were changed to Japanese flavors. It is still loved in Japan today, crossed with chocolate and green tea. The famous place of production is Nagasaki Prefecture.

  • 10g cocoa powder
  • 150g pancake mix
  • 5g baking powder
  • 100cc milk
  • 4 eggs
  • 90g brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp salad oil

Cocoa powder is not required. Try different kinds, such as matcha or strawberry powder. It is also delicious plain with milk.

Step by Step Instructions

Mix the eggs, milk and sugar. Please watch the recipe video to see how much to mix.

Step 2

Please Shake the powders(cocoa powder, pancake mix and baking powder) and mix.
When the powdery air is gone, add the salad oil.

Step 3

Please scrape the dough through a strainer.

Step 4

 Please, cook in the rice cooker for 80 min to complete the cooking process!
After it’s done, sprinkle brown sugar  on top for extra flavor!

No rice cooker!

Don’t worry. If you do not have a rice cooker, you can make it in a pot. First, line the bottom and sides of your pot with a cookie sheet. Then pour in the batter. Close the lid and steam on the lowest, lowest heat for 60 minutes.
