Mitarashi dumplings originated at Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto, Japan. It is a Japanese confectionery consisting of a rice cake topped with a generous amount of soy sauce-based sauce. As a traditional Japanese confectionery, they are loved by people of all ages.
The Mitarashi dumplings I`m going to introduce are super easy to make. If you want to make it more authentic, try adding potato starch.

Ingredients

Mitarashidango
  • 120g Glutinous rice flour 
  • 100~120cc Water
  • 1 tbsp Soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp Mirin (Sweet sake)
  • 2 tbsps Light brown sugar

If you want more authentic mitarashi dumplings, prepare potato starch(2 teaspoons). Adding potato starch to the sauce makes it thicker and tastier.

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Put the glutinous rice flour  in a bowl, add water little by little and knead.

Step 2

Roll out the kneaded dough of step1. And boil water and add the rolled dough (japanese name is “Shiratama Dango”).

Step 3

When the Shiratama dango float, transfer them to ice water quickly.

Step 4

Mix the soy sauce, sugar and mirin and pour over the cooled Shiratama.
